Winter work: Dam building for the bathing pleasure of our feathered friends

We are lucky to have a small creek which runs year-round on our property boundary.  The creek is about 300 yards from our yard through a forest of mixed mature trees.  A narrow, but well traveled trail lures the geese to a small swimming hole on the brook daily during the summer months. In winter, the creek and swimming hole freeze over with up to a foot of ice.

But, we love our geese a lot and know how much they love to bathe.

On warmer spring days, my husband and I tramp through the snow to the creek, slide down the bank and break apart the creek ice to form a temporary dam. Within a half-hour, a long, narrow pool forms and our winter-dirty geese can enjoy a good bathe.
